Quality Staffing

Many companies invest a lot of money into the hiring process. Some companies have a whole department (human resources) dedicated to hiring employees while others simply hire a consultant who specializing in hiring idea candidates for the open positions. And then there are the companies who will hire basically anyone with an SS number and an address (a PO Box is usually good enough).

When you're looking for warm bodies rather than skilled individuals, you run into a problem that happens far too often. At McDonald's, you can get hired on the spot. And when applying, attire is up to your discretion. You could be in a business suit or dressed to go skiing. It doesn't matter. The people who are hired (basically all of them) do the job until they get tired of it and either they stop being the slightest bit productive or they quit, which in result starts the cycle of hiring again. This happens at McDonald's far too much. The store managers hire anyone who applies, usually out of desperation, and spend a month or so training. Then the employee may decide to leave the company. If you've been to McDonald's when it's busy, you know that it takes forever to get your food. Why? The employees usually don't care and aren't putting in the effort.

Now let's look at another example: the bank. The hiring process can take about two weeks. There's, first, the online test that you must pass to be able to apply. By the way, this company has a separate department called "Human Resources". Then, once you apply, you are eligible for an interview. If successful, a second interview will follow. After that, there's a drug test, a criminal background check and your character references will be contacted. Then you may get hired. In the job interview, dress is very important. And in your job history, customer service is HUGE! Once you hired on, after a year you are eligible to apply for positions within the bank. For example, after you've been working for a year, you could apply in the accounting department, if you so choose. The standards are much higher here, but the atmosphere is appropriate for the job and the people who are in their positions are skilled and dedicated to their jobs.

In the first example, total chaos. In the second, the right people are in the right jobs that fit them. Quality over quantity is definitely the way to go.
